For the newly married- do you care if anyone calls you by your maiden name? Are you insulted?
-
I changed my last name because my husband insisted.... and I still use my maiden name at work. It's just easier then changing everything since I work with so many different companies and buyers. Plus my email is my maiden name and that's how everyone gets a hold of me. But I always think it's funny when someone is over apologetic about it if they find out I am married and have been using my maiden name. Then a buyer got snippy with me because I called for her using her maiden name (mind you it's been 6 months since I have talked to her) and she got real rude about it. And was like my NEW name is "Blah Blah", I am MARRIED NOW. I think it's funny, I don't care and I don't understand why people get so up tight about it. I still sign my maiden name on my art work too- sometimes I use both- depends on the show and my mood :) How about you?

Answer:
I really do not care if someone calls me by my maiden name, and like you, I do not understand what's the big deal. Most of my clients known me by my maiden name and when they write me an email they use it. Some of them correct it afterwards after see my signature, some others don't, and I do not care at all. My clients are not my friends and I do not feel is appropriate to correct them as I do not know them personally and they are not required to know the detauils of my personal life. I think is petty to complain about it (and RUDE)... what's the big fuss about? Unless is you bank or your 401k making the mistake, no one should feel "offended". On the flip side (you will LOVE this one) my mother in-law complained to me that when I email her, my name appear as XY and not XZ and now that I'm married I should "correct that"... WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was very insulted by that pettiness. I've had my personal hotmail address since 1997 and I will not change it. Good luck

People who get upset about things like that are so ridiculous. Are you supposed to know all the personal details about your buyer's life? That's just unreasonable. When someone accidentally calls you by the wrong name, there's no reason to get upset or be rude. You sound classy and reasonable.

I don't care if people call me by my maiden name. I prefer my maiden, but I took my husbands for a couple reasons. I don't want our kids to have hyphenated names (they may want to hyphenate when they get married), but I also want the same last name as my kids. I'm still in school, and I use my maiden name there. I've only been married 6 months, and I'll probably strictly have one only when we have kids. I watched a Suze Orman seminar on the tv the other day and she talked about women saying their names, with power! Just say, "I AM ________." That's who you are. I'm still getting used to the last name I don't like, but it's who I am.

Legally my last name is my husband's but at work I kept my maiden name. I really don't care if people call me by my maiden name, although I was on the phone with a customer service rep the other day and she called me "Ms. Hubby'sName" and in my head I said, "well, that's actually Mrs. Hubby'sName, but whatever." haha

That's kind of funny in a weird way. Why would she get so rude when obviously you had no way of knowing she had been married. I am slightly dreading the name change over because I work with so many people and many won't know I got married but I would never call someone out for not using my new name. People are strange.

It shouldn't be a big deal if it's done mistakenly.

I have the opposite problem. I didn't change my last name, because I was happy with mine, and did not want to go through the hassle for changing it to a last name I didn't really like. I have a very ethnic-sounding name, and my husband's last name is Williamson...it just sounds odd together. Anyway, even the day after we got married, we got mail addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Williamson" and that actually just made me laugh. We got a few more letters with that, including from his grandparents, but what can I do? It hasn't really been a problem or anything, I understand it's 'expected' to change your last name to your husband's, but I wish people would understand that some people don't do that.

i don't care if they do heck for me it's hard enough not signing my maiden name on things i have kinda the same situation for my college i still have had my maiden name until this next semester starts so since august i have had to use it also on one of my debit cards it's my maiden name... gets confusing sometimes, alot of ppl still only know me by that... eventually i'm sure it will be second nature to use my married name!!!

I'm not insulted when they use my maiden name. Some people have a difficult time with my married name as it is not pronounced the way it looks. It will just take time. That woman needs to relax.

Well, for me I don't really care...but my more curiosity is how you are able to keep your maiden name at work, if your legal name was changed to your husband's name on tax documents, etc. But I suppose if you are in the art field, you have more power to do as you wish. It doesn't bother me in the slightest when people accidentally use my maiden name. After all, I was my maiden name for the first 24 years of my life...and it's always a part of my identity...I just use a different last name now...I guess it comes down to people expecting other people to make as big a deal about your wedding as you do...if you are chill about it, then it gives everyone elbow room to get used to calling you by your new name. With my art, I have just started signing by my new name...Most of my early work would never be for sale anyways (they are more sentimental in meaning to me and my art journey), and so it hasn't been an issue yet for my paintings and mural work. But the issue of my art did flicker in my head when it came to changing my name. But, I figured just change it. It makes things easier in the long run.
