How can I become an event-coordinator?

How to become an Event planner or Coordinator ?

  • Answer:

I'm a program coordinator - essentially, I plan large events for sometimes over 500 people. It's a really fun job because you get to work with lots of different people and you always "have" to attend the events you coordinate! (But they're usually a lot of fun with free food and things like that.) You should look into taking some classes at a local college. Anything called Program Management or Project Management are all about how to coordinate an event or project from the very start to the very end. They're really, really helpful and will look great on a resume. The other posters have said you start as an assistant or whatever, but I never did. I was able to get a job based on my coursework and practicums done through the programs I took. One thing to look at is applying to a temp agency and letting them know you want to get into program coordination. As long as you have taken courses in this, you shouldn't have trouble getting a position. You can start with internal company events and then after you have some experience, branch out into private events if you want to do weddings, parties, etc.

When you apply at a company that does events, you start off as a production assistant, which is basically a gopher and it starts from here. While being in that position, you will actually see every position there is in an event to make things perfect. If you can stay up until the wee hours of the morning, then this industry is for you.

I have seen these Event Planners and Coordinators started off as secretaries or assistants. I work in a Hotel/Resort and in there they call themselves Catering Managers instead of names mentioned above. So you start from the bottom and learn from these people...typing banquet contracts, orders, food and beverage, planning and coordinating seating arrangements.
