Where should we go for our renewal of vows? Should we invite our families? Should we buy wedding rings?
-
My husband and I have been married for almost 10 years. Currently he is deployed for the next two to three weeks. Our actual 10th wedding anniversary is next week. I had a renewal of vows planned, but he found out that he had to deploy, so those plans were quickly canceled. Thankfully we didn't lose any money. We had thought to plan for later on in the year, but my husband has to deploy again in late June/early July for a year long deployment. Normally deployments for his branch of the military are only 6-7 months. But he's going early, and relieving a man that is terminally ill. There will be a lot of financial benefits for our family. Plus he only agreed to go early, if he can get orders back to the west coast. So he's got it in writing that he gets orders back to Lemoore, California. We won't be seeing him for a year. And that is going to be tough on me and our children. I'm just thinking about the long term benefits. While he's deployed, I will be living with my mom in AZ. Our budget for our wedding was $1,000. We spent less than that. Suffice it to say that week of my life was filled with sadness, tears, and a lot of anger toward other people. What was 'suppose' to be the happiest day of my life turned into one of the saddest days of my life. One of the contributors to that was my husband, and a big majority of it was his stupid sister and our room mates. Three years ago, my husband promised me we could have a renewal of vows. Obviously it won't happen until next year, which I'm ok with. We are a Christian family, so that is one of the contributing factors for us. The pastor who brought me to the Lord, is a retired Navy chaplain, living overseas as a missionary. Obviously he can't do it without traveling a great distance. We are looking for a beautiful, serene, quiet place for a renewal of vows. It has to be in a Christian environment. I've looked at the Wayfarers Chapel, and they want more money then I'm willing to spend just for a renewal of vows. Las Vegas was a possibility, but hubby doesn't want to go there. We're open to ideas and suggestions. My next question. Should we invite our families? I know I would HAVE to invite my husbands sister, and that is not something I'm keen on doing. She hates me, but loves our children. Go figure. My brother has said that he wants to 'give me away' if we invite our families. But if we invite one side, we have to invite the other. It's only 'fair'. We've also thought about our eldest son being dad's best man, and our youngest son 'giving mommy away'. But I'm not sure if that's 'appropriate'. Our twin girls are going to be mommy's mini bridesmaids. My last question. When we got married, we couldn't afford to buy wedding rings. My husband wants me to find a design of ring that I really life, and he can have it made overseas while he's deployed. I can only wear platinum, because I'm allergic to nickel. He can't really wear a ring because of his job in the military, but he wants one for when we go out and 'special' occassions. I told him he should get a special dog tag that he can wear all of the time. That could be his 'wedding ring'. I just need some input here or possible suggestions. Please no rude answers, thanks.

Answer:
It's really up to you who comes. If it becomes too much of a bother- then just keep it your family. It's a renewal so nothing is appropriate or not. It's not like you are standing in front of 600 people demanding wedding gifts. For his ring- try overstock.com my husband can't wear a ring either and he lost his first one. I got one from overstock that he likes to where out and I only paid $40 for it and he loves it!!
