Shock Therapy?

Electro shock therapy for?

  • Electro shock therapy for depression: They have a write up in Marie Claire. Has anyone undergone this treatment?

  • Answer:

I've met people who've done it, most like it, but it's a tough procedure. Doesn't hurt 'cause you're unconscious but sometimes you need to be an in-patient. Remember it is a series of procedures not just one or two.

I asked for it, but my mom wrote my doctor telling him I wasn't capable of making that choice. I'm glad I didn't do it, a lady told me she couldn't read for 8 years after having it done.

I have had about 25-30 sessions as a last ditch effort after more than 20 years of therapy and about 15 years of trying medication which did not help me. The circumstances leading to this choice involved being locked up 5 times in mental hospitals and once in jail in less than 1 year. People on the Internet go on about how you will come out with brain damage and some people say inane things about the psychiatric profession using this treatment as some sort of nefarious scheme to undermine the greater good of the human race, but in reality they are the ones who need psychiatric treatment to help them ascend from their paranoia and delusional fantasy world. There were no doctors pressuring me to get this done, or even suggesting that it may be an option to look into. I requested they give me this treatment; it was my idea. I packed some clothes in my backpack and walked into an emergency room and told them there was no other feasible way to treat me that hasn't already been explored without success. I was going to end up dead very soon if I didn't get my self destruction under control. Despite what the anti-psychiatry movement says, I did not come out with amnesia, cognitive impairment, or physical brain damage. I am confident that even after these sessions that I will still score higher on an IQ test than these alarmists, and I am more capable of rational thought. I got checked into an inpatient mental facility and I stayed there for over a month while they cut through the red tape and figured out who was going to pay for it. I will bet you that those calling it barbaric torture and dangerous on a level that rivals the harm caused by a full frontal lobotomy have never experienced this procedure, never known anyone who has, doesn't have any familiarity with the exact protocol they follow, don't know what drugs they use to make it a painless procedure, and know nothing about what is happening in your brain that results in alleviation of your symptoms. This is year 2009. They don't hook up jumper cables to your ears and plug the other end into a wall socket while you are conscious, standing in a bucket of water, and without any pain management. In the end each of those 25-30 sessions ended up costing over $2,000 for each session and this is not something that an insurance company is going to pay with no questions asked about the necessity. When it is done, there is a success rate that is between 80% and 95% (depending on your source) for treating depression. That is far and away higher than the success rate of any type of medication and therapy technique.

Yes, I had a series of about 6 treatments in January for depression and suicidal thinking. I had really good results espeacially for the first 6 months. My anxiety even went down and I had normal finger nails for the first time in many years (unfortunately I don't anymore). I might have lost some memory, but not memory of anything I want back. The hardest part is not being able to eat breakfast before the treatment. It feels very nice when you are just about to lose consciousness. I think this treatment should be used more often. I definately would consider getting it the next time I get depressed. It is safer than some of the other things I have tried. The procedure used to be very unsafe; people would break bones and lose teeth, but now they control the convulsions so that doesn't happen.
