What Are Some Good Jobs Out There?

What jobs are good for someone who does NOT have good communication skills?

  • My 19 year old son deals with social anxiety and and what's called Selective Mutism. If you're not familiar with this, basically it means he can talk and have conversations but because of his anxiety issues, he stresses easily over very normal every day issues, mostly in decision making and in conversations with people he doesn't know or on subjects he's not familair with. Because of this, employment is not easy to find. The job he has right now which is a food server and dishwasher has been cut too often to only 6-10 hours a week and it's just not helping the self confidence issue when this happens. I've been looking at local job banks to see what else is out there he may be able to do but just about every one of them has, as a part of job qualifications, that you must have good communication skills. What kind of jobs would you would be good for someone who's a good worker but lacks communication skills?

    I think it would be a mistake to allow this disorder to control his life. There is medication and counseling that will teach him how to overcome his disorder so that he can lead a normal life. He deserves it. And it's your responsibility to make sure that he gets all the help he needs to become independent and free. You can't keep him dependent on you forever. Get him some help.

At his age, there are plenty of "starter" jobs in back rooms, filing, custodial, and such where he can work quietly. But like other posters here, I believe he needs to be in active treatment to work with his condition so he is not doomed. My husband suffered for 40 years without the right diagnosis. Once he got it, he just blossomed. But those lost 40 years are simply gone. Part of the rest of our lives are being dedicated to helping others not lose time. Get your son very active help so his condition is treated as actively as possible and he can operate as well as he possibly can. Are you a member of NAMI yet? Please get involved with this wonderful organization. Free education galore, programs, resources, and so forth. In my area, there would even possibly be a job bank for him, so maybe you could find something through that for him, too. Best of luck on this to you all.

I don't like dealing with people in my jobs, if your schools are the same as mine then a custodian job is good that was my first job, you only have to deal with one person, your boss. You can get part time 20 hrs a week, or full time 40 hrs(but this you have to deal with more people), it is easy and not too stressful.

I hate to tell you but your son is showing signs of Asperger syndrome. Your son may need to see a Doctor who specializes in Autism before he gets a new job to be on the safe side.
