What are the effects of long-term sleep deprivation?

What are the effects of sleep deprivation on the brain?

  • I had a seizure due to sleep deprivation about 5 years ago(I'm 20 now) and I was curious as to what the effects could've been on my brain. Around the same time I could've swore that I had a big loss in memory. Like, ever sense then my memory has been A LOT worse. Also, please no jokes about this, I could've sworn that I had a dip in intellegence. Not that I'm necessarilly smart or stupid now but I felt to be around 100-115 IQ but suddenly it just dropped so I don't feel I'm at the average IQ for my age. I was wondering if increased memory loss and intellegence decrease could be a result of the sleep deprivation. Oh, I also stayed up 'til about 4 AM every day for about a full calendar year(yes, I know, it was stupid) and I had no alcohol or drugs between the sleep deprivation.

  • Answer:

Sleep deprivation leads to Depression and depression leads to forgetfulness, decreased sleep, decreased appetite,or increased appetite, loss of memory, lack of focus, irritation, aggression. I have not heard seizures after sleep deprivation .You might have Epilepsy that must have caused a fit. and fit can cause memory loss too. Your diagnosis must be made soon . so that it could be decided what is problem with you. is it depression or something else. You have not described the nature of seizure was it truly epileptic or psychiatric fit?
