What were the health and illness of children's in the past like?

Mental Health- What do you think is the cause of children thinking everything is related to mental illness?

  • You see it too I'm sure. Countless kids as young as 9 and up to about 16 who think every little thing in their life is related to having mental illness. Any little angry feeling makes them bipolar, any little noise they hear makes them have schizophrenia, and so on. Why do children feel they have some big mental illness from everyday normal emotions and feelings? What seems to be the cause of this, It used to be everyone feared people with mental illness and now every teen seem to want a mental illness. This makes it hard for people to take my condition seriously with the severity and complexity of it.

  • Answer:

Because these vague symptoms are all over tv. Emotions most everyone will experience at some point in their life. What kids especially have a hard time with is differentiating these emotions as related to an event (divorce, death, friend that moved, hormones and normal life) from the severity and chronic state of a true mental illness. they are kids. That is why. They may have a sibling or parent with a mental illness and see some resemblance and they may think its cool or unique to have this illness and it may be an excuse to behave as they do or to not change their behavior. I was diagnosed in my teens with an array of things. Bipolar being one of them. I am 30 now and nope, no bi polar. The world of medical "experts" think everything is depression. Everything is anxiety, everything is some mental reason simply because theres no medical explanation that THEY can come up with, must be mental instead of just life. What they failed in my teens to take into account is I was 15, had a crazy, over dramatic jailbird boyfriend, I was using drugs,i was a teen (pms, hormones, pressure), I was raped by a friend, molested a couple times and my mother was either sleeping or in a mental hospital. Wouldn't all that make many teens off balance? Doesn't need a label other than life.

That's what they teach them in school. If you can't have your way you're mentally ill. It gets the teachers off the hook. instead of teaching them self discipline.

The truth is, those are all names for mental variables we all have. Everyone is a slight bit of each, and those measures make different people who they are and allow for difference in opinion, but when someone is too much of those things and not monitored properly, they can become a danger to themselves and others. Often when doctors cannot find a reason for things, they will blame it on a state of mentality such as those mentioned above. It's so often it happens that the public have become paranoid of the accusations that they are mad and desperately try to find the answer. When it's actually a lacking of knowledge on the doctor's part. But the patient will be sure that their problems are caused by underlying depression they had no idea about and start working on mental issues they don't actually have.
