How to stop over-analyzing EVERYTHING?
-
I tend to think about everything that happens to me and/or others around me way too much! Sometimes i'll spend hours of my day thinking about something that shouldn't even be thought about...and it effects my mood sometimes as well. Just wondering if anyone on here has the same problem and what they do to cope? Thanks for your time.

I was like you once. Not any more though. I just realized that dwelling on things made me stressed, and I started having anxiety attacks and i had a stomach ulcer from worring so much and thinking too much about things. worrying about how people perseve me and if i am living up to their acpectations. You are already on the way to recovery. You realize when you are over analyisng something. Now all you need to do is stop when you realize you are doing it. Key signs of when you are dwellling on something would be when you are using "what if " or start to beat down on your self or when you start to dwell on something taht has not happened yet and you try to play it out .., then start thinking "what if this happens". I believe the mind is very very powerful. We have control over our lives. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" -Eleanor Roosevelt. But remember everything takes practice. Plus you need a kicker to get you started in the right direction. for me, it was that my soccer playing went down hill. My stomach was making too much acid and was hurting really bad. And my friends told me I think about things way too much. You need to find a reason to change. if not, you may want to change but it wont happen. Find the Kicker. Recognizes when you are dwelling. Have enough self control to stop yourself. AND then you will finally enjoy life!!!! I pray that God gives you the strenght to move on! elfindreams: You are very right about the third party theory! Imagine yourself to be a person without emotional connection to the problem you are dwelling on and then anyalize (if you must) it from there.

I have had this problem in the past. There are several ways to deal with it depending on personal preferences. 1) Therapy - this helped me significantly as analyzing things outloud with an impartial third party frequently teaches you how to differentiate between those things that need analysis and those that dont. 2) Medication - You may have a form of anxiety disorder there are many medication used to treat this and your doctor will know about them. 3) Mental Excercises - The ones that help me out the most are the ones where I put myself in an impartial third party's shoes... I.e. if I just witnessed this, would I give a hoot two minutes from now. But this is a common mental problem, so I wouldn't worry about worrying too much ;)

I find meditation really helps me, as it clears out my mind and stops all the thoughts running wild. I know what you mean, I'll sometimes obsess about things like what someone said to me and what I should have said, or things that might happen in the future but that I don't even know will happen for sure. To meditate, get into a comfy position on the floor or on a chair (bed might be too soft, might make you fall asleep). Put your right hand into the palm of your left hand and rest them on your lap. Close your eyes, and breathe through your nose. Find the rhythm of your breath, slowly and naturally, without trying to control it. Check for any tension in your body, and release the tension. Relax your muscles. When you have found your rhythm, concentrate on the sensation of your breath going in and out of your nose. When you get a thought in your mind, don't fight it, just gently let it go. Keep telling yourself to just let it go. Concentrate on the sensation of your breath going in and out of your nose. Just sit and breathe, and let all the thoughts go. It may take 20 minutes or so until you feel your mind getting calmer. I find it really helpful, it's like 20 people conversing in my mind when I start, and just a silent room when I finish! And the feeling when you open your eyes again is amazing, everything seems fresh and new. Just what I needed! Hope this helps! x x (P.S. Try youtube for free meditation videos! x x)

I have the same problem. its a large part of the reason i get depressed. it helps to start being more mindful of your thoughts, not try and change them or stop thinking them( because that would probably go against who you are... when taken to a positive place, being a "thinker" can be a asset) ask yourself while being mindful of your thoughts, why does it seem to be a habit for you to focus on things that stress you out, as opposed to focusing on things that make you happy. that is a good place to begin. don't try and change who you are, just work on who you are from where you are now and build yourself to be the best person **you** can be.
