Is it unhealthy to be awake all night?

Sleeping all day and night, can't stay awake or do anything?

  • I've recently been sleeping almost constantly..Had this problem for years, but now I'm at uni so my mum isn't around to drag me out of bed. I've missed loads of lectures over the past few weeks and I'm scared I will fail the year if I can't stay awake to revise for my exams. I've looked on websites about sleeping disorders but they are all about getting too little sleep or having disrupted sleep. I am always tired even after 24+ hours of sleep. I have depression and think sleeping may be a way of coping. Today I woke up at about 11am, but I couldn't find the motivation to get out of bed for another 8 hours or so. I kept thinking, 'another hour won't make any difference'. This happens EVERY DAY!!!! I hate myself for doing this and know I just need to get out of bed, but I can't. How can I stay awake? I'm only taking a small amount of my anti-depressents now so will be willing to stop them and try anything that might help me concentrate in order to work. T I'm only ever awake at night like now, which is when I need to be asleep. :( What is wrong with me? How do I get out of bed?

  • Answer:

It seems (to me) some sort of (clinical, mild) depression, but be aware that no one can make a diagnosis by internet. The best bet is seeing a psychiatrist for a proper diagnostic and treatment. If for some reason that's not an option or if you cannot afford therapy, read http://natural-depression.blogspot.com/ In many cases depression will respond quickly to the use of this treatments (within a few weeks), but if this still doesn't work, see a psychiatrist; psychiatric treatment for depression involves antidepressants and usually but not always, therapy. Hope this helps. :)

You probably have depression and your medication isn't helping you. You need to go to your doctor and get a different medication. Check out "depression self help" and "natural cures" at www.depressiondodging.com for tips on how you can beat derpession. When you sleep too much it is called hypersomnia.

It would be a good idea to have a complete physical and blood work done by your doctor to rule out any medical reasons for this problem. Talk to your doctor that prescribed the antidepressant. Maybe an adjustment or change in medication can help you feel better. I hope things will improve.
