Is this a good motorbike for a first bike?

Whats a first motorbike for somebody looking for a road bike?

  • Hi all, hoping there are some bike riders around here. I've decided im going to get a motorbike suitable for a trip accross america. Before all that, I need to get my licence and so forth. What I wanna know though is what would be a good bike to start off with and in what price range? I dont need something too slick just something reliable and can give me the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance kinda image ... or something close to.

If you have NO riding experience, then it's a bit early for you to be planning a cross-country motorcycle trip. As you said, first you need a motorcycle license, and then you need to gain some riding experience a bit closer to home. A good starter bike for most people is something in the 250-500cc range. You can find a lot of these low-mileage used street bikes on Craig's List or Ebay. Buy one, ride it for a year, and then sell it for almost the same price you paid, and move up to a larger bike. Do the same with a mid-sized bike in the 750-900cc range. Once you have a couple of years of riding experience under your belt, and know a bit more about motorcycles, you can start thinking about the one you want to ride cross-country. Maybe you could even qualify for an Iron Butt award! http://ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm

Since your looking for a bike to tour on the best way to go is a cruiser or touring bike. The design is great for long trips and your back and wrists won't hurt from doing it. The touring bikes also come with larger gas tanks. Make sure you check the weight of the bike. Usually if you get a larger engine displacement (cc) than the bike is heavier but that's not always the case. Super-sport bikes are generally lighter even with a bigger displacement. Any main name brands like Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Triumph and etc. As far as price goes, I would spend around 5000$ AFTER you take your motorcycle class just to make sure you still like motorcycles. This isn't part of your question but just advice. Ride for 1000 Miles before you make that huge tour. You want to be well acquainted with your bike before a ride that big comes along. Make sure you do your tire pressure checks and read your manual for any maintenance needs and fix any issues before they become one on the open road. If you don't know how it's worth your money to pay someone to fix it for you.

When my ol lady wanted to tae up riding she had her eyes set on a Honda Fury. Contrary to he wishes i went out and got her a $600 pos. The deal was if she can ride that through the rain, at night, and use it as sole transportation for a month, and after she completes her riding exam portion for her Motorcycle endorsement. I would get her that fury. 2 days after i bought her that pos, with its duct tape seat she laid it down in the parking lot while learning how to turn. She dropped it at a stop sign when her ankle rolled on a rock. She showed commitment when she came home from work soaked to the bone from the rain, but at the end of that month she road that pos to the dealer and traded it in for her fury. Even though she is a woman, she rides better than most men. Its all because of that pos.
