Best street legal scooter for me to buy?

Need advice on purchasing and owning a 50cc scooter in the States.?

• I am about to return to the States after living in China for a year (where everyone rides a scooter) and I wanted to purchase a scooter to save money on gas for shorter local trips to the grocery store etc. I live in VA and have read that the scooter doesn't have to be registered if its under 50cc and a maximum speed under 30mph. So I basically would like it to be street legal and somewhere around $1k. If you have experience owning a scooter in the States, I'd love some advice on what scooters are best (I was looking at a vespa-like scooter- the Capri 50cc at mrscooters.com), where to buy, and other advice such as whether these scooters can be repaired locally and for cheap, maintenance etc. I'm pretty clueless on this.   Well, first of all I do NOT recommend getting a scooter at mrscooters.com, the scooter I got there didn't start and they never responded to my questions. After that I got a scooter at http://www.ivoog.com and it's perfect! Lifetime support is included and they helped me replace the tire I popped on it by phone (ran over very sharp glass.) You do not need to register a scooter that is under 50cc and goes under 25 miles per hour. If it goes over that is and over 50cc then a license and registration is required.
