How can i convince my mom to let me get a street bike?
-
i was raised by my mom to ride anything and everything. I started out riding a goped at 4 years old then at 6 I was racing my yz80 and traveling around all of california racing by the time i was 13. I am a very good/ safe rider. like i said i was raised in that type of enviroment. And now i am ready to move to the next step. I am going on 17 years old and am 6'2" and 190lbs now. i am not a small guy. so i can not get a small bike. I have been looking at the 2011 yamaha R1. My friends dad let me drive his a while back so i know i can easily handle that much power. But the problem is comvincing my mom to let me get it! She is worried one day she will get a call saying I am dead on the side of the road. That is the only reason i can not get it. She knew a couple people that have died on bikes in her life so that is whats making her so scared. I have tried everything. I have strait A's. i have nearly $3,500 saved for a down payment and i can make my own payemnts and insurance. but she will not let me get my Bike permit. is there any way or thing i can do to assure her i will not get killed? I have even said i will wear a neckbrace, chestprotector, knee pads, elbow pads, boots, helmet, gloves and everything!!! i even went as far as showing her the DMV records of people who have died in car crashes and the #1 death rate is drunk teen drivers NOT street bike riders! I also have had my license for a year so in total i hvae been on the road for a year and a half. I live in a small town too so there is not much traffic either! But anyways i can go on and on and on about all the things i have told her but if there is any last hope that anyone knows about please tell me! i dont feel like waiting anylonger to get a bike so dont tell me to be pacient.

Answer:
It's not you dropping the bike, it's the other POS that may hit you. Your mom; never and that's good to know at least she cares.

It sounds like you've really thought this out, but as an experienced rider I can tell you you're not considering every angle of your decisions. A liter bike is a very powerful bike and a poor choice for a beginner. With that kind of power, it is hard to just say no. When you can do the speed limit in first gear, what's to stop you from 150mph+? I'm an adult and I can't always say no to the speed demon on my shoulder. As far as fitting a bike, there's no way to tell unless you sit on a lot of different bikes. Try something from every manufacturer. Try different styles. Just because it looks cool on the web doesn't mean it fits. Most sport bikes will fit a person your size, with seat heights in the range of 31-33 inches. You can always raise or lower a bike with modifications. Insurance on a liter bike, especially a sport bike, is insanely expensive. You have to carry full coverage if you're making payments. I know a mature adult who pays over a hundred dollars a month for insurance for a GSX1300R. At 17, you're looking at double or triple that amount, if you can even find coverage. I'm sure that you have a lot of riding experience, but street riding is a lot different. There are people driving that absolutely hate bikers and do stupid things that get people killed. Then there's the cell phone driver, the "I have no clue where I'm going" driver, the "my kids are raising hell in the back seat and I'm not paying attention" driver, the old drivers, the tailgater, the "I'm messing with my radio/iPod" driver, and the "I never saw the biker until I killed him" driver. Motorcycling can be dangerous and deadly. Take the MSF rider course. That is a great introduction to how to ride safely on the road. They teach you how to ride and stay alive. Your mom just wants to make sure that you see another birthday. Can you really blame her? Yeah, waiting is hard, but sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for. P.S. - spend more time studying. strait- should be straight

The 'easiest' way is illegal. But since 'her blooded body, cut into pieces on the front lawn on Halloween Night' might not raise suspicion today and tomorrow it might be hard to explain on Tuesday unless covered with pumpkin shards. Sorry, dude, you live under her roof and until you can leave on your own, she's the 'Mom-ster'.

Dude could you imagine the insurance for a 17 year old with an R1? Hahah out of this world. If you already have $3,500 saved up go for a brand new ninja 250. Yamaha R1 for a first bike? That's extreme. As for being a big guy, I'm 6'2 and fit fine on the ninja 250. So you'll be just fine on the ninja. Maybe you're mom may trust you riding, but just the sheer costs of an R1 are too much. I would feel a little spoiled if I had a race bike as my first motorcycle. Just my two cents.

Not the best bike choice. Consider a 5 to 10 year old basic 500 to 750-- GS500 Suzi, Honda Shadow, Yamaha Vtwin. A BMW 650 dual sport is nice but expensive. Kaw makes a similar dual sport and would somewhat fit your old dirt riding experience and fit tall people. Might be able to get that type and set of bags and windshield call it a student commuter. Otherwise wait until 18 and take chances. Dirt riding and racing is good to learn the bikes--BUT street riding has a extra thousand hazards to learn-as in most of other vehicles on road. A extra year of car driving and pay attention to traffic-- as amusing exercise-- observe other cars for a week and count the number of cell phones being used by others, lane changes without signals, red light/stop sign runners and weaving probable drunks. Then consider a small armored car for the street. . .

just say to her that you want a bike as its so personal by yourself enjoying the road listening to the sound of a engine throbbing between your legs... just say your old enough to make your own mistakes... (not sarcastic btw) and just say to her that people are more aware of bikes these days and she sould just trust you to make the right decisions... hope this helps

the DMV records shouldnt be used, they dont factor in the fact that there are less motorcyclists on the road then car drivers, its common sense that there will be more car crashes then motorcycle crashes then. you probably need to look into a outside source that crunched the numbers and put it into ratios or something. And its arrogant of you to have the mentality of " oh it can happen to them, but its not going to happen to me" that is some skewed up logic my brother. Come to terms that majority of accidents with another vehicle happens on intersections. Come to terms that 75% of crashes are fatal, and that 30% of fatal crashes happen on corners. That chances are you will crash in the first 15 minutes of your ride. You have to show her that you fully realize the dangers of owning a motorcycle, and that you will try your best to minimize your chances of being a statistic. BTW getting a 1000cc super sports bike will not help your cause of showing you're responsible. How in the hell is getting a bike that goes 0-60 in like 2 seconds (give or take) as your first street bike showing you're responsible. Hell i'm not even going to get a 1000 supersports bike (once again dont fall into the logic of "its not going to happen to me" ) I can see that you're "experienced" at riding, but once again why a 1000CC supersports as your first street legal bike? get a freaking 600cc supersports. R6, cbr 600, gsxr600,zx600 are good bikes they have more then enough power, and they also have enough power to kill you efficiently like a 1000cc sports bike if that's what you want. (im personally stopping at 600cc, i dont see the need of why you need a 1000cc sports bike) and if this still doesnt convince your mother, then get a family member to cosign with you and get your bike you say you have enough money for the downpayment, insurance (i doubt you can pay for insurance on a R1 though) and you say you can make your own payments, so just cosign with a family member, or just wait till your 18 and do everything yourself

I'm sorry but a little go of an R1 is one thing actually riding it is another ! I've rid currently a blade, gsxr and Busa I tell you now you will kill yourself on an R1 17 is way too young I mean you must be an idiot to even think about it at that age firstly the insurance will be 10,000 cheapest quote if they will even insure you it's going to be the price of the bike, secondly if you can't kick a bike such as a Triumph Bonny over then kid don't even bother looking at anything bigger than a 125 or 250,also you've had an 80 ! back in the day I was racing 250's and I tell you now I was right behind the big bikes catch them on corners lose them on straights ! I've had 48 years exp on a bike and my son (alexis) has 4 he's currently racing 250's and I tell you now he's a far better rider than most and I if I was an insurance company I wouldn't touch him for a 1000 fair enough 600 because he has a ninja but not a thow....
