What is a good learner's motorbike?

What are the restrictions applied to 125cc motorbike using learners?

  • I live in the United Kingdom, and am just about to turn 17,i have done my compulsory basic training, and was wondering what restrictions applied to me, as to whether i could take a pillion rider, whether i can go on motorways/duel carriage ways, and which geared 125cc bike to get? (i was looking at either honda cbr125 or megelli 125r)

Hi it would be best in the interests of your own safety to avoid the motorways even if you are allowed to use them. the 125 cc motorcycle would struggle with two up as we used to say any bike less than a 500 cc would struggle or would not last long due to the weight. you need to check the restrictions on the government web sites. also short distances like 10 -20 miles would be a good idea,

The dvla website is gobbledegook, good luck trying to make sense of it. At 17, with a *full* license the only restriction is that you can only ride bikes up to 33bhp, but until you have the full license you cannot take pillions or ride on the motorway; duel carriageways are fine though. The CBR 125 is a rather sweet little bike but you'd be better off buying a basic commuter bike for now and then buying a 250cc bike when you've passed your test. The CBR 125 is a bit of a rich-kid's toy and for not much more money you could buy a Kawasaki Ninja 250. If I was asked to pick out a bike for you, you'd get something like this: http://www.sportmotor.hu/bonc/124/1.jpg Ugly, cheap, reliable, doesn't matter if you drop it.
