What type of bike should I get (first time rider)?
-
Hi, I am a college student and I have decided to make a switch from a car to a bike. However, I am very unintelligent when comes to bikes and ccs and what-not. Crash course anyone? A major concern for me is keeping my *** on the bike without falling. I have ridden a bicycle for years and am very proficient on them if that makes a difference in what type of bike I can use at my riding level. So my question is simple, what cc or motor size or anything else should I be looking into. Also, being a college student, I really want a good looking bike, a "sexy" looking bike even. Do you have any suggestions for a good looking bike that is within my riding level? Furthermore I'm trying not to break the bank too much here but I'm open to any suggested bikes. Thanks for reading!

Answer:
Florida requires you take the MSF course and pass it. Do that first, and then once you process your paperwork with the DMV you can ride any bike you can afford. Generally speaking, if you are going carless, you should get a bike with sizeable saddlebags. That means no sport bikes. Honda Shadow 750's or 1100's are good options, depending on your size and how well you do in the msf course. You will need to get rain gear in addition to a helmet and armor jacket. You will get caught in the rain, and It is usually best to just keep your gear in one of the saddlebags. Also, a sissybar makes a good mount for attaching a bag for more storage. Walmart has a bag that slips over the sissybar for about 30 bucks that I have used pretty extensively and recommend it as a cost effective option. The bikes I mentioned can be bought for less than 5k used in good condition. Insurance is also considerably cheaper for college aged students. Sport bikes are out of the question, the may look great, but as your only vehicle you will be hating life after a couple weeks and your first insurance bill. You really need to get some experience and fall in love with all aspects of riding before making the decision to rely on only a motorcycle for your transportation.

How far are you going, how much do you have to carry? Try a scooter a 125cc should be sufficient for a short commute, if you want to save money. “Sexy” is in the eye of the beholder, practicality can be obvious.

Florida, east coast, south.... temperatures fabulous, a lot more rain than I care for. US-1 runs 45mph limit, traffic runs up to 55mph. You don't need the freeway. A 125-150cc scooter is good -- fast enough, cheap on gasoline, keeps your feet drier on wet streets (you have rain,) lockable storage (for college books, rain gear.) Unless you are unintelligent with more money and all you really care about is "fun" and "sexy", then get a Ninja 250 or a V-Star 250, or even bigger since bigger is better and "sexier."
