Where do you stand on california motorcycle smog (S.B. 435?

What do I need to get my motorcycle permit in California?

  • I'm 17 years old and I already have my driver license and I want to add a motorcycle class on to that. From what I understand, already having a license waives me from providing proof of driver's education. I've already completed the motorcycle training course and obtained the DL389 certificate of completion. I went to the DMV today to get the DL44 form i need to fill out and the lady there told me that since I've had my driver's license for over a year already, when I go to take the permit test, I need to take both class C and the Motorcycle test so she told me to check both class C and motorcycle on the DL44 application. No where does it verify that online, on the DMV website, or on my motorcycle hand book that I need to take both tests, it only requires that I pass "traffic laws and signs test FOR MOTORCYCLES" Am I missing something? Can someone please confirm the process and requirements of getting my motorcycle permit because I am receiving mixed answers and I'd hate to go to the DMV on my test day with the wrong information.

  • Answer:

Seems to me you jumped the gun a little bit. You've got to hold the permit a minimum of 6 months. THEN you fill out the DL44. You should have never grabbed the form, just asked for the permit. When you do get to the point of filling out the DL44, you list both if you want both. http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm#MINORMC
