How do you adjust a clutch on a 1989 honda Goldwing 1500?

Honda XR100R Clutch won't adjust?

  • I went to adjust the clutch because the clutch is grabbing when its not supposed to be. When I pull the clutch and shift into first, the bike lurches forward and moves like the clutch is not pulled, even though it is. I used these 2 adjusters to attempt to fix the issue: http://i.imgur.com/UsrAM.jpg (Nearly out of thread, maybe one turn of the nut left) And http://i.imgur.com/TycHz.jpg (Followed manual's guidelines to adjust this one) I tried to use this one to no avail: http://i.imgur.com/bFeEn.jpg Now that one seems not to be turning or something. I have tried to turn both things and it's like the whole cable is turning too with it. The clutch is STILL out of adjustment. How can I obtain proper adjustment? (Manual suggests 1/8-1/4 Inch freeplay on the clutch lever) Thanks in advanced.

It sounds like your clutch is not disengaging. This can be caused by a stretched out cable, plates that are sticking, worn clutch springs, clutch out of adjustment or lack of oil in the crank case. Check your oil level and make sure you are registering on the dipstick. If not, change your oil, it is probably time. Take off your clutch cable, take it into the dealer and have them measure it to see if it is within spec. If it is not, purchase a new one. Since you adjusted the clutch adjustment on the right side case, the lower cable adjust, the bar cable adjust and followed the shop manual, you are out of adjustment spec. This means you have worn clutch parts and they need to be replaced. If you were not low on oil and the clutch cable was within spec you are going to have to pull your clutch springs. Take them to your dealer and see if they are within spec. While you have the clutch springs out, you might as well take the fiber clutch plates to the dealer also to see if they are within spec. EBC clutch springs are around $12.00. Fiber/friction clutch plates are around $35.00. A clutch cable is around $15.00. Try Ebay or Bike Bandit.

Your clutch basket has grooves, this will not allow disc s to release. If not worn too badly a flat file will remove ridges. A new basket is not that expensive. This is a very common problem, seen it many times.

Sounds like you may need new friction plates and springs then. Check them first though to make sure they are within tolerance because it could just be the clutch cable which has stretched too far, and because it's stretch too far the push rod mechanism and spline are disabled or disconnected. Pulling in the clutch handle actuates the clutch slave cylinder, pulling in on the push rod, the push rod then pulls back on the inner clutch plate releasing it which disengages the drive.

Sounds like a new cable should be on your shopping list. When installing, adjust the bottom screws first than go to the upper.
