How TOO..fix cracked plastic fairings, spray paint bike properly?
-
Hello everyone.... I have a 96 yzf 600...The bike has all different fairings and plastics, I decided to do an aprila scheme to the bike...I want to paint the tank front and head light as well s tail fairings a shiny royal/electric blue. The side fairings and bottom fairing white. The side fairings have small cracks, and maybe two cracks in them about 22 inches long. How can I repair a cracked plastic? Id like to repair before painting so i dont need to just paint and leave it. Also I want to paint the bike with spray paint bye duplicolor. Ive done a katana in all red with white wheels. It came out good with a few small runs. I also wonder...the paint I used for the katana I primered all surfaces and then used the paint on the metal tank and wheels as well as the plastic...should I find a paint that goes specially to both surfaces, or two same color different paints. The wheels I want electric blue as well as tank. Any help with what I should get, I may do duplicolor dropfeed

Answer:
In order to fix the plastic, you will have to know what kind of plastic it is. Different plastics need different solvents and fillers to repair them. It could be anything from a vinyl to an ABS. The first thing I would recommend, is checking with your local dealer. It is possible that they might have a repair kit available, or be able to recommend a source for the repair. You might also check to see if there is a plastics specialty shop in your area. If so, they can test the plastic and recommend a repair material. Good luck, and ride safe, Tad

The heat gun idea isn't going to work. I've tried with other plastic objects before. At the very least, if it works, it won't be pretty. You're going to want to use adhesives. You might put some sort of reinforcing patch on the back. If you have to, use body filler to smooth out the cracks.

you can use patching compound to cover the crack. you mas first sand off the piant. than apply the patching compound then set it or dry it. when dry! fine sand it to finish it. it will be like new when you painted it.

A lot of bike dealers have plastic welders. I've had it done on Vetter fairings although this isn't something that's always pretty. In a concealed it's ok though. Here's what has worked for me with busted or cracked fairings. Behind the crack, I lay a piece of 3/32"-1/16" sheet steel like that commonly found on kitchen appliance doors, small signs, etc. From the side that shows, I bore holes through the plastic and metal and use small pop rivets to secure the two together. When painted, the rivet heads don't really show up that bad. I've never had the need, but I guess if the plastic was thick enough, you might be able to countersink the rivet hole just a bit and then use body filler over the head. If you do this, one thing you might want to do is to stagger the rivets. For example, it you lay a 3" wide strip behind a crack, don't make two nice even rows of rivets 2.5 inches apart with rivets 1" apart in the row. Instead, place rivets 2" apart in the row with two more rows closer to the crack itself with rivets 2" apart. In other words, try to place the rivets in a W pattern. This kind of repair is very strong and I've used it to repair heavy, heavily loaded parts such as touring fairings with great success. I like it better than plastic welding because while I've had plastic welds crack again, I've never had a riveted repair fail again.
