Can a rider get struck by lightning while riding?

  • I was riding in a lightning storm the other day and the idea hit me and made me nervous..I know you can't get struck by lightning in a car because of the rubber tires or whatever, but is it different on a motorcycle?

  • Answer:

Apparently so. http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/9407981/detail.html# Even if it doesn't directly hit you, it can kill you. I have seen trees explode when hit. The sap boils and Boom!

Yes, a rider can be struck by lightning. You have no protection from it. It would be no different than a person standing in a field being struck. When lightning strikes a car, it travels around the cage to the ground. As long as the driver is not touching any metal, the driver is safe. The rubber tires don't matter.

Yes, it can happen. A car can be hit too, but the lightning will likely pass through the steel parts, and not affect the occupants. If caught in a serious lightning storm while riding in open areas, I take shelter under an overpass.

Now you know why you can't get struck by a lightning in a car. But, yes, you can while riding your motorcycle especially, in open areas. James advice is perfect ! Take shelter under an overpass, gas station, house or, whatever. But, never under a tree. Good Ride ! hayabusa from rio de janeiro, brazil

Yes, you can get struck and killed by lightning on a motorcycle. The advice above is all correct. The rubber tires will have no effect on insulating millions of volts from seeking ground. It would be like trying to stop a speeding semi truck by putting a stick of butter in front of him. Get off the road, get inside somewhere and have a beer until the storm passes. Live to ride another day.

Some say theres no way for electricity to ground through rubber, but I never doubt mother natures abilities on anything.....you gotta put your feet down sometime. Theres reports of it happening, so I would think it definitely could.... http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/strange/news-article.aspx?storyid=59939 http://www.courierpress.com/news/2010/jul/20/man-on-motorcycle-struck-by-lightning-in-ky/ http://wonder.cdc.gov/wonder/prevguid/m0052833/m0052833.asp

They sure can. Many think you're safe in a car because of the rubber tires, but that is not true. Like James said, it can strike a car but it's the metal frame around you that's protects the driver, not the rubber tires.

Yes, in Texas we got lots of random rain if I am on a motorcycle I run to the nearest gas station buy some food and chill inside. I heard under a bridge isn't the safest thing but go indoors.

You can protect yourself by sitting in the car without touching any metal frames. If you are in open place and there is no any other places to stay in, Car is the better place to get in. But in motor cycle the case is completely different. Lightning always point highest place to discharge. The lightning can point your head, If you driving the motorcycle in the open place and there is no tallest building.
