What is a possible cause of a motorcycle belt popping twice in the same week?
-
My husband owns a 2004 Ironhorse (texas Choppers).. 1919. It has 4,000 miles on it. He has only owned it a few weeks. We went out of town and it was parked at a friend's house. It was ridden while we were gone and the secondary belt popped. The guy who drove it agreed to replace the belt, but on the way HOME from his house, maybe 2 miles later, the belt popped again. It was alright when we were going slow but as soon as we got over 50 mph it broke again. He wants to do the work himself, but I want to make sure before we fork out the money for another belt that it's not something else causing these belts to break. Anyone who is familiar with these bikes, I would appreciate any input on common (or not so common) problems that would create this issue. Thanks in advance!

Answer:
A look at the broken belt should help to determine what the cause is.Did it break horizontally ,that would mean to much or to little belt tension.Did it break lengthwise, and have some wear on the outside edge, that would mean mis-alignment which could be caused by a bad bearing getting ready to go out completely causing the belt to ride up.OR,maybe that was a problem from the get-go and that is why it was sold with only 4000 miles on it,getting the belt to track true,is a lot harder than it seems, while keeping the centers at the same distance.

Alignment is off, the belt is not adjusted properly, or there is excessive wear on the belt or components.

Suggest that you ask that same question on youtude Video. While l do not know much about motorcycles when a belt comes off that tells me that the tension on it is too loose. Your word popping is not the word to use because the average person thinks of other things then popping belt that can not explode, slips, brakes, comes apart, slides off the gears is far more helpful.

Tension and alignment. Most likely too tight on the tension. Alignment will cause noticeable wear on the side of the belt before failure. At only 4000 miles, I doubt you have had the wear problems I have. Even so, check both pulleys for wear. My HD's stock pulley lost the hard chrome coat. It was quickly eaten to sharp edges. Same thing happened to the replacement. I've been through two belts in under 40,000 miles.

as above, but also bear in mind that with all new parts, you have to run them in!

Look for a rock stuck in one of the pulleys.
