What's the best bike for the trails?

Whats better 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

  • i want a bike to ride around my house hit jumps hill climbs and riding fast in trails and whats better 125 or 250

  • Answer:

Assuming equal engine capacity, 2 strokers give you more power. But, that's the only good thing you'll get from me regarding this engine setup. Maintainence is a ******. You have to top up 2T on top of gear oil changes. Fuel efficiency is lousy compared to 4 strokers. The smoke emitted stinks even if you use the perfumed variety Exxon sells. The exhaust note is whiny and highly irritating. Plugs foul more often, and if the settings aren't right, you get excess 2T collecting at your end can. For everyday economy and less hours of agony spent repairing your bike as opposed to actually riding it, I'd recommend you a 4-stroker anyday.

4 strokes are good for trails because you can ride in higher gears and just chug along and save some gas for a longer ride. 125 2 stroke is equal to a 250 4 stroke and a 250 2 stroke is a 450 4 stroke in power capability. 2 strokes like being in the upper rpm range while a 4 stroke can ride in just about any rpm range and be happy. depends what you like riding and what kind of riding you plan on doing most.

2 strokes are for racing, 4 strokes are for playing. The bigger, the better when it comes to engine size. 2 strokes generally require a little more maintenance, but it's not that bad.

Without a doubt, 4-stroke. 1. It's quieter, 2. It gets MUCH better gas mileage, and 3. It's MUCH cleaner for the environment.

Two strokes are very fast. They have a higher RPM. But with Four stroke technology four stroke are competing equally with 2 strokes. Two stroke design is very inefficient. When It comes to trail riding I would definitely go with a four stroke. Throttle is a lot less jumpy and the four stroke have a very smooth power band. But if you are planing to be full throttle non stop with non stop power, go for the 2 stroke.

2-strokes make more outright power per cc, but 4-stroke engines work over a wider rev range and are more flexible. The 'power band' on a 2-stroke is there because the engine works efficiently only in a narrow engine speed range... this is basically because of the open ports in the engine. The 4-stroke is easier to ride and that can mean easier to ride fast. Get an engine that suits your riding. More power is always nice but if you are not able to use that power, say because the terrain is scrubby and you just never need to go 90km/h, then you're carrying the weight penalty of the big engine.

Sounds like riding hard. 4 strokes lasts longer, less pollution and noise, no oil mixing Try to get a water cooled engine and a 250. you will be happy with it

Well Ron, I've been on 2 strokes my whole life. I bought a CRF250R last year and I'm now sold on the 4 stroke. I'm not knocking the 2 stroke, but I'll never own another one personally. I can scream this thing around the track or putt around in the woods at very low rpm's and never, ever have to worry about fouling a plug again. It is like a freakin' tractor in the woods. I just can't say enough about that bike. As far as the comment that 2 stroke are for racing and 4 strokes are playing...this guy obviously hasn't seen a MX race in the last few years. Not one single motocross team has their riders on a 2 stroke bike.

if your buying your first bike then get a 125 and then get a 250 but i would get a 125 2 stroke and also they are both good trail bikes the 2 stroke and the 4 stroke 250 or 125

I would prefer not to have a stroke thank you. I'm sorry, I could not resist. I guess, I am just old fashioned, but I still think a two stroke 125 is a better bike for trails then any four stroke anything. I learned on a 125 when I was just a kid. "Just give it gas and let go of the clutch", they said. I did. They laughed. I learned to ride a wheelie and soil my shorts at the same time that day. BUT..., I did not drop the bike.
