What size atv can I get away with?

What size ATV for my 6 year old?

  • I am looking to get an ATV for my 6 year old son. I was thinking to get a 50cc because it will be his first and I want him to learn on something small. My fiance wants to get him a 90cc so he doesnt outgrow it in less than a year. What do you think? He is an average size 6 year old. Weighs about 50lbs, and is about 51" tall.

  • Answer:

i have 2 girls and we bought them a lem condor 50cc at ages 5 and 6 this bike worked well for them but they quickly out grew it (leg room) a 90cc atv can have the throtle limited the same as a 50 cc. You should take your son to a dealer and let him sit on a 50 cc and a 90cc model to see which one currently fits his body better and still has room for his growth. also remember to shop around as there are some manufactures that have a 50cc and a 90cc engines availible in the same frame. and they also offer engine upgrades so that you could start with a 50cc and then add the engines modifacations later for more power as his size and ability increase. The most important thing is his safety but if he is not comfortable due to the size he will be less likely to ride it and enjoy it. Also please get him a good quality full face helmet and make him were it at all times.

My uncle bought my cousin (7yrs old) a 90cc two-stoke oil-injected automatic quad from gander mountain. The manufacturer is kolpin I believe, anyways he had no trouble learning how to ride it. Just adjust the throttle limiter, a quad is very easy to ride even for a 6 year old. p.s. anyone who says you're crazy obviously doesn't realize how safe they really are.

I'd go with the 90cc. Most kids bikes are super easy to govern the throttle down. With a 50cc he will be bored stiff in a year guaranteed! I sell 5-10 kids units a week and the parents who always buy the smaller bikes almost always come back to upgrade or at least say they wish they would have gotten the bigger unit. We sell 90's and 110's to people for they're 5+ age groups. We have people putting 2 year olds on 50's because they can be governed down to about 5 mph. Think about it before you buy, do you want to have to buy again in a year?

I assume you're going to use this on private ground? We've got a dad and his son who take one of these to a beach near where we live. Its spoils the whole serene scene for everyone. Not that they care. As long as they are having their fun... I'm in the UK. I dont know what these things are like in terms of infestation in the USA. Getting worse here, and always amongst a certain type of person...

We have a 50 cc for our 5 year old and choked the throttle down until he learned to control the machine. Some 50cc are larger in size than others. Ours is the smallest we could find but I have seen some much bigger that are still 50 cc. That size should last for several years.

that's what i was going to recommend a 50 cc,and have the throttle cut down on it for a while,it can be adjusted so that it wont run to fast, because some of those little 50 cc ones will move on with you,but later on you can cut the throttle back up when he learns to ride it a lot better, good luck hope this helps.

You can get a 90cc for him and just adjust the throttle limiter (an adjustable screw on the throttle unit) so the throttle wont open all the way so it wont go as fast. Then when he gets older you can adjust so it can go faster. get a honda trx 90... hope this helps thanks...
