  • hi all, i need to know what engines fit in my honda xr 125 l3 2004 bike frame. i know the 125 fits obviously but if for the same money i could buy something quicker i would. • Answer:

Honda used to make a engine case family of 125cc, 150cc and 175cc- the engines had same motormount locations, chain sprocket location and in many frames would interchange. the cylinder bore on 125 and 150 was the size difference- 175s got a slight stroke increase in same engine case. The legal class difference between UK and American markets- UK had 125cc class split for tax and new riders, many US markets and federal law split at 150cc - so same frame and engine case used for the 2 markets- one gets small bore cylinder, other gets the large bore cylinder and sales to new riders with lots of common parts means more profit or competitive price. The US market for 175s means the same frame and engine are now federal interstate highway legal to use- low cost to make niche market model. Check out the dirt cycle models for a 175cc engine- look at shops that get racers that crash and bring tape measure for engine size- might find a decent 175 that will bolt right into your frame. The possible legal class difference that results is between you and MOT- a upper head cap that has a 125cc emblem may fit on a 175cc head and is at first glance by police a indication you have a legal for your license 125cc engine still in frame that has VIN saying it is 125cc. 175cc dirt engines may be tuned hotter than street models but burn a bit dirtier than street emissions currant- carefull with throttle around police cars. Engine case sidecovers over clutch and alternators- emblems/decals noting 125cc and 150 or 175 cc usually interchange, again first glance by police at a engine case that say 125 model is about all they would do, few street officers will check cylinder base plate for tiny numbers giving bore size. This advice may not be appreciated by MOT inspectors-- but experienced inspectors know it already, it is the street police you normally would meet who don't get informed of possible sneaky tricks for minor vehicle problems. .
