DVLA inspection for BSA A65 - what model is my bike?

  • Ive rebuilt a BSA A65 from a box of bits, the bike has just been MOT'd and the next step is to get it registered by the DVLA and obtain an age related plate. I have a dating certificate from the BSA owners club which says the frame is from a 1962 BSA A65 Star, however the engine is from a 1968 BSA A65 Firebird. Ive built the bike to look like a 1968 BSA Firebird but was wondering how the DVLA inspection would register my bike? Would they use the oringinal 1962 frame number as the basis of the age related plate or could I claim it was a 1968 Firebird based on the engine and the style to which I have built the bike.

    it is the frame number which identifies the bike so it is a 62. congratulations on rebuilding the A65, it is a lovely bike and I wish I had one

They will most likely go on the frame ID. - if you change the engine in a car or bike for a similar one, you do not have to get it re-registered. Put the same engine in a different frame, and it adopts the reg from the frame.

A65 was is it's model nos., but don't know if it had any other info relating to this, so do a search for the BSA owners club and should get a definitive answer from them.
