Looking into buying my first motorcycle...its a 1980's Yamaha Seca?
-
Im 16 years old and race dirt bikes very often. I race a KTM250SXF and have also raced a Honda CRF450R a few times. Im a very good rider and have been riding motorcycles my whole life. I now have my motorcycle license and want to purchase a Yamaha Seca 550..will it be a good bike for me? will i enjoy it? is it to much power, any input is requested! thanks!

Answer:
I haven't ridden the 550 but I have owned an 82 650 seca for a few years now.Its similar except the 550 has a chain while the 650 is a shaft drive. As a first street bike a seca 550 is a good choice.Just be sure to have it checked mechanically. Its a chain drive so you won't have to adapt (the back ends tend to lift on acceleration with a shaft!).Being an air cooled in line 4 service is relatively simple.I don't think you will have a problem with the power. Its quick enough to have fun with but not overwhelming.Just don't get any ideas about keeping up with the current crop of crotch rockets The power feels more like an sv 650 than a gsxr..I think the biggest difference from the mx bikes that you are used to racing will be the weight. Will you enjoy it?I don't know you enough to say for sure but i really think that you will.

I know a guy who bought one brand new, rides it, and will NEVER sell it. He wants nothing else, as his pleases him so much. In truth, while I may think it a bit much, it is much better than the other choices usually made. As a 16 year old in Cali, you'll have to go through both driver's ed and the CMSP course to obtain a road license. I suggest you investigate that first. A road bike does no good without being able to ride the road. http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/checklists/mc.htm The XJ (Seca) was chain final. I had an '82 XZ550RJ. That one was shaft drive. The torque twist wasn't too bad but took a bit of getting used to.
Firecracker .
2 cylinders for the Seca, 4 cylinders for the Seca II. It was good bike in it's day, but now subject to 30 years of abuse and neglect, look carefully. The Seca II were too tall for me. It's fast enuf but not a racer, good street bike. I've forgotten, is it shaft drive, I adjusted the chains on my previous bikes nearly every week, CHECKED the fluid in the shaft drives once a year but NEVER had to add.
