How do I obtain an international motorcycle license?

Do I need a class C license in order to obtain a motorcycle license?

  • I am 16 and recently obtained my permit. I'm only interested in obtaining a motorcycle license in order to ride in sf. I'm aware of the steps in order to receive my motorcycle license, but I'm not sure if I first need a class C driver license. Thank you.

  • Answer:

You are in California. You do *NOT* need to have your Class-C. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=veh CVC 12804.9.(b)(4) Class M1. A two-wheel motorcycle or a motor-driven cycle. Authority to operate a vehicle included in a class M1 license may be granted by endorsement on a class A, B, or C license upon completion of an appropriate examination. I know it is a difficult word, but the word "OR" means you can get either a "Class M1 License" or you can get a "Class C M1 License." This is true in California as it is *any* State that has allows you do have a motorcycle license instead of only allowing a motorcycle endorsement on your car driver's license. It is *STUPID* to not get your Class-C as well your M1. Without that "Class C" you cannot drive a work truck or van, meaning there are jobs you may not work. Without that "Class C" you cannot drive a rental car if you fly somewhere on vacation. Without that "Class C" you cannot drive a U-Haul truck if you want to move stuff more than you can carry on a motorcycle. To repeat: The Correct Answer, from the California DMV site: http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/checklists/mc.htm > To obtain a motorcycle license if you are under age 18 you must: ... > To obtain a motorcycle license if you are 18 or older you must: ... > If you do not have a California driver license, you will also need to: See.... The State of California Department of Motor Vehicles says you do NOT need a car license.

By SF do you mean San Francisco? Then yes. It depends on the state, but here in California we don't have a separate motorcycle license. You get your regular license first (for cars) and then the m/c license is an endorsement on your regular license. Personally I think that stinks, but we see motorcycles here as a recreational device, not a transportation device.

No, you do not need an automobile license to obtain a motorcycle license. Due to your age you do need to complete all the requirements for one, plus additional for the motorcycle license. (I thought you said you were aware of the steps) Basically, you must make a choice - Do I accept the auto license I just paid for or not?

Firecracker .

You do not need a Class C license to get an M1 or M2 license in California. The only additional requirements for the folks who do not already have a drivers license are spelled out in the attached publication. http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/checklists/mc.htm BTW you have some beautiful not far from town roads near you.
