Motorcycle Chain Problem.

What is a good light motorcycle chain breaker and do i need a press/rivet too?

  • I am building one of those Gas-Bicycle engine kit setups. It is not the first time I have done this but this time i want to do the chain myself (instead of a bike shop). The problem is i need tools for a very small motorcycle chain (larger than a bicycle chain though). There are cheap chain breakers but they do not have a press and i wonder how to get the chain back togeather. (it does have a little clip on the master link.) Here are the tools i am looking at on ebay (and i hear beware the tusk tool): http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTORCYCLE-ATV-CHAIN-CUTTER-BREAKER-RIVETING-RIVET-TOOL-/160717070754?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item256b7be1a2#ht_550wt_648 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-MOTORCYCLE-TOOL-KIT-CHAIN-BREAKER-CUTTER-TK03-/170450231074?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item27afa01f22#ht_2610wt_648 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Premium-Chain-Breaker-works-420-530-chain-ATV-Motorcycle-/290622443196?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item43aa728ebc Which of them would be best? Is it relatively simple to reattach a master link with vise grips or is a better tool the ticket? Help me out guys! - thanks, Mark

You might also want a split link when you come to connect the chain together again. Local bike shop should be able to sort u owt!

I use vice grips to press together master links with a clip. No special tools required. Hold a small nut over the hole in the side plate when pressing together. The pin will protrude into the nut as the side plate is pressed on. Press a tiny bit at a time and alternate between pins to prevent bending the side plate. This tool will easily remove a master link with a clip. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tusk-Chain-Breaker-Splitter-Cutter-Link-Remover-Motorcycle-ATV-New-Tool-/290660716908?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr&hash=item43acba916c
