Whats the simple difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke?

Whats the difference between a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke dirtbike??

  • Answer:

A 2 stroke engine fires every time the piston comes up and dumps the exhaust at the bottom of the piston stroke comes back up and fires again. This engine makes 2 strokes to fire once. A 4 stroke engine fires at the top of one stoke then go down and when it goes back up the piston pumps out the exhaust. The piston goes down and then back up and fires again. This engine makes 4 strokes to fire once. For both engines a stoke is when the piston travels it's full length of up for 1 stroke and the full length of down is another stroke. This descibes two strokes of any engine.

The main difference would be power delivery. 2 strokes get power higher up in rpms and they will scream but they have less torque and low end power and low speed riding will foul plugs. 4 stroke has gobs of torque and power down low but are slower. And they don't mind putting around all day without fouling plugs.

2 strokes take of faster and can hit power band and are lighter and cheaper to fix and use pre mix petrol. 4 strokes have a lower end tourque which can go harder but not faster, they are heavier and cost more to fix. run on staight petrol. 2 strokes, stroke twice to every power stroke. 4 strokes, stroke 4 times to every power stroke. It all depends on what type of ride and bike you want.

You need pictures to effectively see this so go onto an online encyclopeadia and search for petrol engines and you should see some diagrams explaining the cycles a petrol enging goes through.

The best way to see the difference is to go to the web site "How Stuff Works" and see for yourself. The web address is: www.howstuffworks.com

One of the two strokes is a lot harder to restart after shutting off or killing. I don't remember which stroke it is. Someone else might know the answer but I thought I might suggest it incase someone overlooked the thought/idea.
