What kind of sports bike motorcycle to start out on?
-
I was thinking about getting a motorcycle, and I think something along the lines of a sports bike would be cool. So what kind should I start out on if this would be my beginning bike? My guess was something along the lines of a Honda CBR250r, or Kawasaki Ninja 250r. Would those be a good size to start out on? What are some other bikes? I'm 5'9" tall, maybe I'll get a little taller, but I doubt it would be much if any.

Answer:
Those are exactly the bikes a beginner should be shopping. And skip the DMV while you are at it http://online2.msf-usa.org/msf/Default.aspx

A 250 would likely be a good starter bike. I have a Honda Rebel 250. I don't know about their sports bikes, but 250's are light & nimble in the city. And on the highway, you can do 60+ mph. Tho if you plan on doing a lot of highway driving 60+ mph, for long drives, a bigger bike would be better. If you're looking for 2nd hand, pre-owned bikes - check ebay. That's where I got my rebel. Even tho the weather is mild in Fla, make sure you have some rain gear. Big rain drops smacking you in the face at 60 mph is brutal.

A CBR250RR is a good choice because it rides like a true sport bike, having 4 cylinders. It has a nice amount of power that you won't get bored with instantly. It's a fun bike.

I like sports bikes but it is learning to run before you can walk, the're designed to bring out the best of the best riders and they're hard on passengers. Standards and Cruisers are more rider and Insurance friendly. There is more to riding than safety classes where you know what problem will jump in front of you and when. Ride those for a year then sell it to another beginner and buy your Light Speed 1600 with 2.0 G cornering. And remember to sign your organ donor card.

First take some professional training, then get the bike. Either of your choices would be reasonable for a novice, sitting on them can help make up your mind. At the moment there are only limited choices in that displacement range, there is a Hyosung which might suit. You might want to buy a secondhand bike, let someone else take the depreciation hit.
