What is a good learner's motorbike?

What is motorcycle engine limit in cc's for Nsw Learners?

  • I am geting a new trail bike to use on the road and off road in NSW i am 16 im wondering what is the engine limit in cc's im looking at a KTM 250 exc-f or a KTM 450 exc. i am just worried about if i will be able to ride a 450cc on a learners permit? or will i have to get the 250? I have 5 year experience riding motorbike so ill have no problem handling the 450. thanks

  • Answer:

As far as I'm aware, NSW does not have an engine size limit for new riders. They have what's called the LAMS - Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme. (See link). Both the KTMs you mention are approved for new riders. Edit: Oops, sorry, I see the 250 isn't on that list. That's weird - it means that the 450 has a power-to-weight ratio of lower than 150kW/tonne, but the 250's is higher; so the 250 isn't approved, but the 450 is! Very strange. Ring the RTA to clarify. Edit 2: I stumbled on this today. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/tests/motorcycleridertrainingscheme/motorcyclesnoviceriders.html So basically every 250 that's not specifically excluded is approved. So my original comment is correct. They are both approved.
