the best jumping bike and durable bike is a yz 125 yamaha and also a kx 125 kawasaki

The big 4 Japanese manufacturers (Honda,Yamaha,Kawasaki,Suzuki) all make good motocross bikes,and KTM from 2001 upwards,a few things to consider would be what your local dealer stocks,as they will be your source for spare parts. Don't just buy the newest model you can afford either,an older,well maintained and looked after bike is better than a newer model that has been thrashed and will need a fortune spent on it in the future. If the bike is missing teeth on front and/or rear sprockets,but has a good sticker kit,give it a miss. Squeeky suspension and new handgrips,give it a miss. I believe the best second hand mx bikes are ones used by racers,they usually always maintain their bikes,and any accessories are useful ones.Don't buy a bike with leaking fork seals either,if the sliders are 'scored' or marked in anyway,new seals won't stop them leaking and will cost you more in the long run. My fave 125 is the KTM as it has the most power of all the 125's,linkless rear shock,which costs less to maintain,and the hydraulic clutch on them is light as and bullet proof,you won't ever need to replace a clutch cable and the clutch will get a lot of use seeing as your looking at 125's. KTM's come standard with a lot of aftermarket parts already installed and as a result they last longer,for example,the piston and ring is made by vertex,it will last upto 6 times longer than a Jap brand bike with the standard ones in it as the 'Big 4' make them themselves out of softer materials,and the Vertex ones are the same price as the stock Jap ones,and if your son isn't going to be revving the date out of it,it should last a long time. Most important no matter which brand you buy,spend money on good oil,both 2 stroke engine oil and gearbox oil and keep a clean air filter in it,everything else is relatively cheap by comparison to get fixed,another good mod is getting suspension set up for his weight,ability and intended use. A good start is looking through old dirt bike magazines and read the tests on them,some magazines even have a 'what rates and what brakes'section that they do after a bike is 12months old,and that will tell you which bikes held up better after a year of use and should help you make an informative choice. i personally run a performance bike shop in pa.thru my 2 years of operating i would definatly say to ride red.go with a honda.in my opinon and expierence they are the best in any class.a stock one shud jump that length or longer.but also depends on his weight and skill.weight height and all that.but yeah a honda cr 125 any year shud do the trick pretty well.dont buy a suzuki or kawasaki.yammerhammers are ok but no suzuki.

dude, get 'em a honda. they're more reliable. get him a used cr125r. stiffen up the suspension and put a good sized sag on the rear end for preloading. =]
