How can i get into atv racing?

My sister has her daughter racing motocross?

  • My sister and her ex bought my niece a small ATV when she was 3. I hated it and tried to talk them out of it, but they never listened. Now she is 4 and she has a dirt bike and is racing against tons of other kids her age. They still won't listen to my pleas and I even talked to my niece herself about this, and she refuses to stop or talk to her parents and says it's fun, no matter how many crash videos I show her. I keep telling them it's dangerous and they just keep telling me that I'm wrong and "it's no more dangerous than other sports", yeah right. She still rides her ATV around the desert with the family and they already have my 2yo nephew on a dirt bike with training wheels, and he loves it no matter how many crash videos I show him too. Is there anyway I can at least get them to wait until they are legal driving age? Is there anyway I can stop the kids from wanting to ride? And I don't know exactly how these races go because I refuse to go and support this activity, but I assume there's speed and jumping like everyone else does. I asked this in the parenting section but the answers were no help. Most of them were apparently ok with this.

And you thought that asking people who like to ride motorcycles would get you a different opinion? While you may disagree about the severity of injury, I can truthfully tell you I have seen worse road rash on a baseball diamond. I got mine on a sidewalk - on foot. Bruised ribs - volleyball. Broken toes - tripped. And I still keep getting older. There is no way you would be able to get these kids to stop riding. The BEST you can do is to help them be safer. Instead of crash videos to scare them, instructional ones to help keep them out of trouble. You say you assume things go on, but you really have no idea - because you refuse... (your words). I don't like anyone interfering in my parenting, especially if they won't make any effort other than to disagree. While I think those kids are too young, that's just another opinion. I've done many things in my life that some call "dangerous", yet thousands have done the same before me and survived quite well.

You are talking about a sport that it is very apparent you have very little knowledge of. Mind your own business, riding is a great family activity and done with proper gear is relatively safe.

Mark

maybe you should mind your own business and interfering in your sisters family life.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the whole world thought like you! Nothing but pure cream and sugar. Well, others have their own thoughts and you need to understand that although you may not agree with those thoughts they still have them. A pair of ear-bugs plugged into an iPod with the Beatles' song 'Let It Be' may help you relax your wanting to 'help'.

I understand your concerns, but on the whole people do what they want to do, they obviously accept the risks involved and so must suffer any consequences there may be. Stop the scare tactics with the videos, its not working. You don't have to condone it but you don't want to fall out with them either, so YOU either join in and make it as safe as you can, without spoiling the fun or come up with a better alternative. This may take cash and/or time on your behalf. I'm sorry but whinging doesn't help.

Your name just goes to show what an idiot you are. You watch a few videos on youtube and you are an expert? How much cotton wool do you use every week, wrapping your kids up to protect them? "And I don't know exactly how these races go because I refuse to go and support this activity, but I assume there's speed and jumping like everyone else does. " So you openly admit you know nothing about it and refuse to even try to learn. I would be surprised if your sister still talks to you. MInd your own business. Your sister will have the last laugh when her kids grow up normal and probably end up making a good living from racing, whilst yours are so drugged up on Ritalin that they either end up in jail or a mental asylum because they know nothing about life and assume they can do whatever they like. You disgust me.

I respectfully suggest that you raise your family your way, and allow others to do the same with theirs. "Most of them were apparently ok with this": You're swimming against the tide, baby!

Mind your own business. Butt out. Go stick your head in the sand. A family that plays together stays together. Yes, there is potential for danger and injuries, but there is that just crossing the street, riding a bicycle, taking a shower. You can't protect your kids from everything and supervised quad or motorcycle riding and racing is a lot of fun for everyone. Stop being such a worry wart. PS: If the kid does get hurt, the I told you so's will be met with murderous intent. Be supportive, not vindictive.

There is nothing dangerous about riding and racing. Watch some YouTube videos of dirt bikes and motocross races. The crash videos you show are of street bikes. I've never heard of anyone getting seriously hurt, falling off a dirt bike. Whatever you say will not change her love for the sport. Show your support and go to one of her races. Would you allow her to go skiing? It's more dangerous exiting the ski lift than riding a kids ATV. You can get just as hurt skiing, as riding a dirt bike. What makes riding a kids dirt bike at 20 mph, any more dangerous than letting her ride a bicycle in the street without training wheels? Would you mind if your niece rode horses? What makes a motorcycle any more dangerous than horseback riding? Horses ride fast in the dirt, make quick turns, jump through the air over obstacles. Wearing so much protective gear that is required to race, a dirt bike is safer. It's more dangerous riding a skateboard at a skateboard park than a dirt bike at a motocross track.

Put her on a pony instead. Buy industrial quantities of bubble wrap, cover the course, your niece and her bike. Or lock her in a cellar.
