What to do when Painting a Motorcycle?

Painting a car/motorcycle: how do you keep the paint from peeling off with the tape?

  • I've had this problem almost every time. The tape comes off smoothly but then every foot or less, small pieces of paint start flaking/peeling off with the tape (on the edge, NOT underneath the tape). I've heard people say use a razor blade, but I really don't want to cut into the paint. Is there a good time frame to remove the tape? Such as, once the paint is completely dry or while it's still semi-wet? This time I'll be using it to paint some stripes on a motorcycle. So any tips, especially from experienced painters, would be greatly appreciated! I'm using a compressed air paint gun and probably just Dupli-color premixed paint, although I may mix it myself if I get another brand.

No Micky-Angelo, but I've found that using the proper primer to begin with on a well sanded surface than stripping the tape off just after the main coat works best.

When removing the tape, NEVER remove it by pulling it away from the surface at 90 degrees. Instead, lay the end of the tape back onto itself and pull in that direction at 180 degrees. That way you are pulling the underlying sideways rather than pulling it away from the surface. You might consider buying a inexpensive plastic moisture trap and mount it before the gun. In humid weather you will be amazed at how much moisture it catches, moisture that would otherwise be mixed into the paint.

Try Painters Tape, the blue one.

I pull the tape as soon as I'm satisfied with the coat.
