Should i get a Motorbike as my main mode of transport ?
-
Hello !, I need some advice, im thinking about getting a motorbike instead of a car. i drive my dads car at the moment a suburu liability B4. it is a nice car and it is available for me to use 90% of the time as my dad has if own company van. although he does some times need the car on weekend and fuel is costing me a fortune ( about $100 a week) now i am getting my motorbike license this week, ( i have never ridden at motorbike before) it seems like a good idea for me to finance a motor bike to get to and from work Sutherland nsw to mascot nsw ( about 22 KM) which takes me about 45 min in peak hour traffic. apprentily with the bike im looking at ( kawasaki ninja 250r 2009 for 7 grand) will only cost me around $20 a week in fuel that saving alone is almost enough to cover my repayments. I just need some advice weather or not this is a good idea. also my dads car will still be there for me to use if the weather is bad. are motorbikes as dangerous as people say they are even if ur a safe rider?

I'm in Los Angeles, I believe I get slightly lower temperatures in the winter and a bit less rain overall. I have been motorcycle only for over five years, but can 'borrow' either wife's or daughter's car if needed. Which is rarely. It is better to ride a bike in the rain than drive a car in the sun. If it rained more here I would get good rain gear. A late model used bike is considerably cheaper than a new bike, and usually just as reliable. Your route is non-freeway so just about anything over 150cc would suffice. The Ninjette is a good choice even if you would never catch me on one. The 2007 and earlier are physically slightly smaller than the 2008+. A motorcycle is a smaller target, is quicker, is more agile, is far more capable of avoiding a collision than a cage. Enough so that even though in a cage you have a 50-50 chance of zero injuries, the bike is safer. For any one particular person riding a motorcycle is safer, less risk of injury, less risk of death, than riding in a cage. Whether or not the bike is for you depends on whether or not you prefer the minor inconveniences of the motorcycle versus being confined in a cage.

If you peruse this category long enough you will run across this cat that goes by "Aussie HD Rider". This guy uses a bike for over 90% of his daily transport needs and apparently has no problems. Experience and riding as if every car driver is trying to kill you will keep you safe. There's no substitute for experience: you just gotta get out there and build upon it. Jump in dad's car when the weather is cruddy.... 7 large sounds a bit pricey for a new Ninjette 250....I'm sure you can find a better deal, perhaps on a lightly used one that another noob learned on and upgraded from quickly.

Motorcycles are more dangerous. But the danger lies in the ability of the rider. Please read the "Hurt Report" http://www.clarity.net/~adam/hurt-report.html Ninja 250 is a fine bike the seat is hard as wood. You end up with a iron butt. I strong recomend a trail bike. THey´re easy to ride and are safer for beginners. THere are fine models from Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Look for dual purpose bikes.

bad idea ... think about riding that thing in cold windy rainy weather ... and if you are a careful driver you will wear all the protective equipment and not ride in a t-shirt and flip flops like some dumbasses out there ... and i doubt you want to walk around in leather all day ...

I think it's possible to have your motorbike as your main mode of transportation. You'll learn a lot your first year riding. Remember to get good insurance as well as full gear. It would be great if you took a safety course.

Motorcycles are great toys but lousy Only transportation. They are not dangerous if you respect them, but other ppl don't respect them/

Motorbikes are dangerous, only if you speed. Get one if you feel like getting one. Otherwise, don't even think about it.

If you have ready access to a car when it rains or gets too darned cold, I say go ahead and get a bike! I would choose the 500cc Ninja over the 250cc, but lots of people love the Ninjette. You'll need to budget money for helmet, jacket, rain suite, gloves and such. A motorcycle class could save your life. Other than learning to operate the darned controls and ride the bike--ON DEMAND--you'll need to learn to keep your eyes up and moving. Don't be afraid to spend a little money on riding books and videos now and again. They'll pay for themselves in safety and joy.

I've been riding for about a year now, even throughout the winter in Virginia, USA. It gets down in the 20's, and you'll likely need appropriate riding gear for cold weather and rain, as well as a cover for the bike. I ride a 2002 Suzuki SV650. It costs me about $8/wk for gas (about 240 KM). Gasoline costs about $2.65/gal here. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is take a course that provides instruction in riding. Learned to brake hard and swerve properly are life-saving skills. See the Hurt Report summary below. It's full of good information on the hazards of riding. Most of the danger in riding in the USA comes from a car making a left turn in front of you at an intersection. I imagine that the same applies in Australia in reverse; a car might make a right turn in front of you and not see you. Riding in heavy rain can be quite dangerous; you need to adjust your speed for the conditions. Another common cause of accidents is taking turns too quickly. I hope this helps.
