Motorcycle Chain Problem.

Motorcycle chain: standard vs gold plated?

  • Hi I am about to change my motorcycle chain with a new DID chain. D.I.D. makes two types of chains for my yamaha xt660r: 520VX (standard OEM grade) and 520VM (gold plated). Does anyone know if it's worth the extra quid (actually around £20 more) to pay for the gold plated chain? Will I be able to significatnly extend the time between chain replacement by buying the VM chain? I'm not exactly after the looks of the chain, I just want it to work properly for as long as possible. Many thanks K

  • Answer:

It is not gold plated - gold plating will not stay on a chain. It is a form of plating that gives the chain a golden colour and more corrosion resistance. The gold chain should be better quality and particulaly have x ring seals which are better for longevity than ordinary o ring types. I always use xring type and gold colour

Just use the standard unless you are racing ,i used to remove mine regularly and soak them in molten candle wax when i was racing, the later chain lubes are no better really as the chains lasted just as long, its the single cylinder engines that wear them faster.Remember this-you ride what you can afford, the extra money is better spent on more efficient body and head protection.

go with the standard...the extra money is just for looks. a chain will wear long before it will corrode.

Don't waste your money.......the other chain will give you no longer life/usage

Hi ive used both on my ZX12R and its worth the extra cash cos you get what you pay for so far its an extra six months and counting, but ist up to you

Simple answer. The gold chain resists corrosion better and therefore costs more than the non-gold chain. Do you ride in an area that salts the roads during the winter? If so then you need the extra protection, do you ride only in a dry area? Then the standard chain will last just as long. If you ride in an area that salts the roads during winter but you oil and clean your chain several times a week then the standard non-gold is fine, but I would never spend soooo much time on a chain, I would buy the gold and do only once a week oiling of the chain.

The only way to significantly extend your chain life is to fit a Scottoiler or similar. I regularly see 30,000 miles from my chains(no that's not a misprint). Gold chains are easier to clean and stay looking nice where a standard chain looks dirty all the time. BTW always replace the sprockets and the chain at the same time or the new chain will wear out in quarter of the time.

If you want extend the life of your chain lube it after every ride and clean it regularly. Now chains have "o" or "x" seals in them it's no longer needed to boil them. Just lube and clean and you'll be amazed how long it will last and how seldom it needs adjusting.

I highly recommend the gold chain. I also would be confident in saying Mr. T would make the same endorsement.
