Can you get a temporary driver's license in California?

Can I get a motorcycle license if I only have a drivers permit in California?

  • It says on the DMV website that if you are under 18 and want your motorcycle license: -Prior to January 1, 2006, you must have a Class C or higher driver license to operate a motorized scooter. -Submit proof you have completed both driving education and driver training. -Show your California driver license, if you have one issued to you. Of course there were more requirements but these are the ones that had to do with wether or not you needed a permit versus a license. But i am confused. So is this saying that if I have my drivers permit, i can apply for my motorcycle license? Or do i need a drivers license?

  • Answer:

Why worry? Go to the DMV and ask. Either your permit is enough, or they want the same information again. Either way you get out with a motorcycle instruction permit -- you can ride solo day, not on the freeway. In 6 months you should have passed the road test and have your Class C license you will get an M1 endorsement on your Class-C license. Otherwise, assuming you don't want a car license, you will get a Class-M1 license and you will not allowed to drive a car.
