Motorcycle alternator rotor keeps getting build-up?
-
I have a 1986 Yamaha FZ600 that the alternator contact plate on the rotor keeps getting a build-up of carbon from the brushes. I cleaned the contact plates with alcohol and then 0000# steel wool, and replaced the brushes about 1000 miles ago. Now it needed to be cleaned again. What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Answer:
Common problem with brushes. Continue cleaning the rotor regularly. Preferably use "scotch brite " pads instead of steel wool. Steel wool will cut into the rotor leaving ware lines to grind down the brushes faster. Polish the rotor until it is as smooth as glass.
