Can you get a temporary driver's license in California?

Can I get a motorcycle license without having a drivers license in California?

  • I'm 18 years old with a drivers permit, but no license and I was wondering if I would be able to get a motorcycle license. If I could, what are the steps in order to get one?

  • Answer:

http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm STEP 1 Apply for a motorcycle license, M1 •Complete application form DL 44 •Give a thumb print •Have your picture taken •Pay the application fee •Pass a vision exam •Pass a traffic laws and signs test. DONE! You have a instruction permit to allow a motorcycle on the streets. You *may* ride, but you do not have to do so. If you want, you can ride any motorcycle on the streets, just daylight, no passenger, no freeway. ** You do not have to have a motorcycle. You do not have to ride. You do not have to practice.** STEP 2: • Take the CMSP course: http://www.ca-msp.org/ I took the class in 2004, after 40 years my first motorcycle. I learned some new information. STEP 3: Get your license. The part I am not sure about.... • Provide a certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training (DL 389) to DMV to be issued your license. You will not be required to take the motorcycle driving test at DMV if you currently have a California Drivers License. The DL 389 waives the motorcycle driving test at the DMV. There is NO way to have you legally test on the street. You cannot carry a tester on the pillion. You will not have a class-C license or permit. As far as I can figure, they *cannot* test you on the streets. • After you have submitted your CHP certificate ** or passed your driving test **, you will be issued an interim license valid for 90 days until you receive your new photo license in the mail. This part sounds like all you need it the certificate, no street test, which they are not capable of doing anyhow. -------- Thus: Apply. Take class (on a closed track, not the street.) Get your License. Note: I did not see any part that said you actually have a motorcycle or have ever driven anything on the streets. Scary. Please e-mail me back in a few months if this is the way it actually goes.

Sadly, we see motorcycles as recreational devices, not transportation devices. So we don't have a separate motorcycle license, only a motorcycle endorsement to your regular driver's license. You can ride a moped without a license at all, but for anything bigger than 2 hp you need a driver's license.

Yes, you can. Here's the checklist for what you need: http://dmv.ca.gov/dl/checklists/mc.htm You will need to pass the training course. Links are inside. Simple to find, even from the East coast.
