Can I take a Illinois motorcycle safety course for my Wisconsin license?

  • I live in Wisconsin, really close to the border of Illinois, and today I received my motorcycle permit. I was wondering if I could just take the safety course in Illinois because I have a friend who lives in Illinois and I would like to take the class with him. I don't want to spend the $300 just to find out it doesn't count as a waiver for my Wisconsin motorcycle licenses.

    The first answer is wrong. What he quoted you is the process for getting an Illinois motorcyle license, not necessarily the course. The DMV does not have the authority to say who can or can't take a course offered by someone else, but they do have the authority to say who can have an ILLINOIS license and what they will accept in lie of an obstacle course test or whatever they do there. So as an out of state resident you can take the class, you just cant get a license in Illinois. The MSF certification is national, and Wisconsin will accept it. THe only caveat you may run into is if it is offered by a community college and there is a price difference or priority given to residents.
