What is the best area in Berlin for a young artist to live?

  • I'm moving from Williamsburg Brooklyn NY to Berlin in two weeks. My job is offerring me a discounted apartment to myself in Bayrischer Platz. However I was told the best place for a young hipster to live is in Kreuzberg. Since I don't know anything about either neighborhood I didn't object to the apartment, but I'm scared I might end up in a place with no art scene, no fun cafes and vintage shops, and no young people to hang out with. Advice? bitte?

    Bayrischer Platz is not too bad actually. Yes, Kreuzberg is one of the hippest areas but by no means the only one. Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain and Neukölln are cool too. You'd be living in Schoeneberg, which has a big Gay scene and is therefore pretty laid-back. Also, you'll be cycling all over town and you can reach Kreuzberg within a 10min ride. (Yes, cycling - no hipster goes without a 2-wheeled friend)... My advise is to take the apartment and see how it goes, then you can always change if needs be..But if you want to make sure to be in a all inspiring hipster-area, then yes, the above mentioned areas will satisfy you. Kreuzberg has been a pleasant neighborhood for decades (though I only know it from visits, not actually living there) but nowadays not the hip-and-happening it used to be. maybe Prenzlauer Berg is the place for you. my best advice for you: contact some gallery for instance after checking what's on in the city. my guess is you can tell exactly what you want, and they can tell you where to go and get it. in general, the best spots are in former East Berlin.
