Discuss the impact the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright made on modern architecture?

  • Discuss the impact the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright made on modern architecture. Use the examples such as the Robie House, the Francis Little House, and the Guggenheim Museum. What was Wright's approach to architectural space and design? What role did the architect play with respect to the patron? Did Wright's style evolve during the course of his career?

  • Answer:

Frank Lloyd Wright was the pompous, self-absorbed father of modern American architecture. He helped ensure the death of the American city in favor of the suburb, all the while suffering a life of personal and professional turbulence. Even in death, the chip he carried on his shoulder in life increases with every book bearing his name that goes straight to the "Bargain Books" section at Barnes and Noble. It should be mentioned that FLW died in 1959, and did not see the Guggenheim Museum in New York City completed. And since the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain was not completed until 1997, he did not see that one completed either. In fact, he didn't design it at all. The Guggenheim in Bilbao was designed by Frank Gehry, who like Wright was named "Frank" and designed a museum for the Guggenheim foundation. Frank Gehry designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

I believe that Mr.Frank Wright made a great deal of impact on architecture.Maybe he didn't design 'The Empire State' or 'The Chrysler' but he definitely created a standard for architecture. The 'Francis Little House' is definitely a standard in it's design. The 3D model is reminds me of the old houses in the Feudal Era of Japan. The interior looks somewhat of a Japanese castle. The 'Robie House' exterior design looks that of the 'Getty Museum' over here in Los Angeles. The Guggenheim Museum is probably one of the most dramatic pieces of architecture.Next to his other work (that's similar),the Walt Disney Concert Hall.It looks like it's trying to move out of it's shell.I think he was trying to make like a "metallic water" theme.I believe that Frank Lloyd Wright had lot's of inspiration on Japanese Architecture. Both the 'Robie' and 'Francis Little' are very beautiful pieces of Architecture that seem to be very spacious. from the inside. On the outside they look reserved and small.I've never been to the 'Guggenheim' before,so I'd say that the museum looks large from the outside and very much large on the inside. If you will.Knowing that it is on some water,it's probably small.I don't understand "What role did the architect play respect to the patron"?I apologize.Mr.Frank Lloyd Wright's style did evolve during the course of his career. In the 70's I never would have expected that he would create a project like the 'Guggenheim' or the 'Walt Disney Concert Hall'.His style was very wood like and raw.Now all of a sudden there's the "Metallic Water" style. That was unexpected of him.Modern architecture wouldn't be the same without Mr.Frank Lloyd Wright and will never be. :)
