How do I get an image copyrighted?

How much trouble will I get/can get in for using an image that's not mine/copyrighted on a t-shirt?

  • At zazzle.com, you have the option to create a t-shirt. Now, I know people use images that they didn't create all the time on that site and I'm just wondering. I want to create a KISS Asylum tourshirt. I am not using the actual album cover, but a photoshopped version of the cover with their makeup. Since its not the actual picture and a fan photoshopped picture, can I still get in trouble if its not my picture. What's the worst that can happen to me?

  • Answer:

Generally speaking unless you're planning to sell or distribute the t-shirt you should be fine. Usually companies usually only threaten lawsuits when someone is making money off of their copyrights. If you're only making one or two for yourself you're likely not going to get into any trouble. The one issue you may run across is if Zazzle will make your t-shirt at all. They may have their own rules for printing copyrighted materials. You may want to check on that.

I'm a little worried about the photoshopping: that might be what could get you into trouble (angry creator of the album cover), or at least the company that did the actual printing.
