Is it possible to become a professional web designer without college?

Being a web designer?

  • I want to become a web designer, i will be starting college in less than a year, what are some things i can do now to help with the process of becoming a web designer? I heard I have to learn computer codes and Html. can anyone give me a good website on learning those things, and or good books to read about learning them? What classes will I have to take? I am going to the college to talk to them about it, but I would like an Idea of what classes I would need before I go in. any other tips/advise would be great! thank you

Don't worry so much about what classes to take. The college and faculty will take you through it. Colleges, in some ways are measured by their graduation and post graduation job placement rate, so they do everything they can to guide you through the process of getting your desired degree. For right now, I would just concentrate on getting familier with HTML. Maybe a little CSS if you're bold. These are really introductory coding languages you'll be learning in the early stages of your web design classes. In the simplest terms, HTML tells your sites what to do, and CSS tell you're site how to look. Web design has gotten very sophisticated over the years. Where as once it was only HTML, now HTML, CSS, DHTML, Javascript, Actionscript, PHP, Jquery, Ajax, and some others, are all now part of the web design-o-sphere. Like I said, you'll get to this when you get there, so start simple for now. Don't set out to know everything about HTML and CSS. Some basic understanding will go a long way once you start your coursework. And I don't wanna make it sound like being a web designer is like being a programmer where you just type thousands of lines of code everyday for your job. It's not like that at all. In fact for the first two years I did web design, I only designed the graphics, look/feel, and organization of the sites, and then our web developer did all the coding. Eventually I got tired of depending on her and learned the coding side for myself. Here are some good resources for you. Your may not be able to use all of them, but use what you can. http://www.webdesignerwall.com/ http://net.tutsplus.com/ http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/ http://www.good-tutorials.com/tutorials/css http://www.good-tutorials.com/tutorials/html http://www.good-tutorials.com/tutorials/flash And lastly, read up on... Adobe Dreamweaver ( http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/ ) Adobe Flash ( http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/ ) You'll be working with these two programs quite a bit in school Good luck and have fun :)

If you've never been exposed to web design before, then you have heaps to learn. Have you ever designed a web page before? If not, I wonder why you've landed on something so foreign and new to you to study in college. That might not be a great idea...lol. People generally have something they're accustomed to that they plan to further at the level of higher education. Jumping into something completely new will be a difficult process and you may not even enjoy web design once you get your feet wet. At any rate, there's a lot to learn, my friend. HTML is the basic language of the web. It consists of scripts and codes that are complex and require a great deal of understanding. Do you know what HTML looks like? You can see what it looks like rather easily if you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox. In either browser, simply go up to the "VIEW" menu and click on "SOURCE" or "PAGE SOURCE" (depending upon which browser you are using). A window will pop up showing you what the Yahoo! Answers HTML looks like. This is the basic structure of HTML. Most websites consist of a series of tables and divs (a kind of table) which spaces out the format of the page where the information is inputted. Images and text are inserted into these tables. There are more complex languages such as CSS, JavaScript, Flash, and so on, that also work in tandem with normal HTML to create more complex web pages. There's so much information out there you need only Google it to get started, or look on Amazon to find a basic web design book.
