How do I cut intricate designs in metal for super cheap?

Can i glass etch using home-made designs cut out of masking tape?

  • i want to do etching on some glasses/bowls with armour etch cream and I would like to do my own original designs. I had the idea to cut designs out of masking tape as a cheap alternative to buying stencil material to cut designs into. Plus i thought it would stick in place good on the glass. Has anyone tried this? If so is it effective? thank you for your help!

I dont know if masking tape works but I know contact paper does. You can buy a huge roll of it for around $2. You can find it near the kitchen area, around the same area where utensil trays are for drawers, at stores like walmart or target. If you are going to go the route of doing the stencil yourself though I would invest in an exacto knife. You can get one for about 5 bucks at a craft store. Make sure you get the clear contact paper, I believe its the cheapest and you really do get quite a lot in one roll.

I'd suggest trying whatever you buy first on scrap, to make sure that the tape you are using isn't going to react with the cream. Maybe run a test on a variety of possibles at once, as something like painter's tape might be better.
