How to refiine n make my statements into a FINE ART?

I need Serious Help with my porfolio for art school!?

  • I am trying to put together a porfolio for SCAD in atlanta. this is an art school and i dont have much artwork but the stuff i do have is really good especially for the fact that i have only taken one drawing class. well it would have been better if my mom hadnt gotten involved.. my stuff is not completely done... a lot of the stuff is not exactly FINISHED! but to make a long story short i was not able to finish it because my mom took my artwork so i could use an expensive camera to take a picture of my half finished drawings, instead of using an okay camera to take pictures of completely finished drawings. thats really neither here nor there sorry i didnt even really need to say that. the point is that the pictures of the drawings still look really bad because I was really just trying to snap the photos and get away from my moms boyfriend. so these photos are high quality but they are crooked and unaligned and it looks a lot like someone just took a picture of a drawing instead of a perfectly framed picture with cropped sides and it looks really amateurish i was wondering if the picture quality would take points away from my portfolio? or what about the fact that my work was not done yet. I am planning on writing in my artist statements that these works have not been finished and i still have a couple things i would like to do with them and name the stuff i was going to do. I also am thinking that maybe i should just leave the pictures crooked and skewed and just write "i wanted to keep the wall in the photos of my drawings just to bascically show that it is a drawing and it would help you understand the size of the picture and that it is not a ppicture but a drawing" or just crop it as close as possible and hope that they understand that i am taking a picture of a drawing and that it wont be a perfect print. what do you think? what do the judgers really focus on when i am submitting do they look at my photomanship and take it into account or do they just ignore it and focus on my artwork... i mean, afterall i am not going to that school for photography i am going for video game animation

  • Answer:

I think it's best to try to present the work in a professional manner. Maybe you could include the originals in the actual portfolio itself, or do some smaller drawings that will fit in. Also it might be an idea to do some rougher sketches and technical studies to show how you plan etc. And maybe include some work in other mediums, ink, charcoal, watercolour etc. But they're not necessarily looking for perfection, they're looking for potential. I went to these workshops at an art school and we did drawing and painting etc and I did these rough sketches [they were really rough and I didn't actually think they were very good, they were just plans for a painting] but the instructor said they were fantastic and that if I was to apply to the art school with those sketches in my portfolio I would probably get in because they showed my ability to plan and construct an artwork. So I think make sure you include works that show both your skill and your planning and thought processes.
