Light Painting/Graffiti?

well i finally got light painting/graffiti ;DD but something instead of seeing the picture or words i wrote, its a giant blob of light or blur. when this happened i was taking pictures outside and it was pitch black with maybe like a street light or a dim porch light but it was pitch black please help how to reduce this?

Answer:
You have to close down the lens opening so that the exposure is right for the light source you are drawing with in the time you move it around - if you leave it on automatic or wide open it is just going to collect all the light it can. Then you have to open the shutter, do your thing and close it. Also, the light can't shine on you while you are moving (or not much of it.)
