Should I go to art college?

Is it impossible for me to go to art college?

  • I'm a freshman in college and I'm thinking about what I want to do with my life. I really like art, especially drawing, but I only started last year. It seems like everyone in art school started at least during freshman year of high school. So, I have no portfolio. Just some drawings in my sketch book and a couple paintings. If I were to pursue something in the art field, I would want to be a storyboard artist for DIsney or Pixar. And to be that, I would have to go to a really good school like Ringling. So I'm starting to think it's impossible. What do you think? Any advice?

  • Answer:

No, it's not impossible. You are just going to have to work hard outside of class to improve your skills and build a portfolio. Most people don't start their art eduction with strong skills, what they have is the passion to learn and improve. If your school doesn't offer the major you want find out what schools do. You may want to stay where you are for sophomore year to get more prerequisite classes out of the way and try some more art classes. Then when you do transfer you will have a portfolio started and fewer credits to worry about.

Other answers

I would talk to a guidance counsellor at your current school. It is usually possible to either take courses as electives or maybe even change your major. Not everyone wakes up to what they want from life at the same moment. You might even want to take a different course line than what you are thinking about.
