modernism was a progression to what was ultimately believed to be the perfect underlying structure to life, and humanity, and modern art reflects this ideal of uncovering the basic underlying (perfect) structure. postmodernism is the adverse reaction, which holds that there is no underlying structure to the way things are. these structures are imagined and not real. Therefore the art reflects the real-ness, and baseness of life in opposition to the polished zeitgiest of the modernists.
