    The gold ratio is something that is said to appear over in over in nature and because it appears this way in the natural world, we humans naturally find this to be aesthetically pleasing. So it's no surprise artist use the golden ratio in their work. Not only is this found in the rule of thirds, it's also found in the shape of the art work itself. While most canvases aren't a perfect golden rectangle, they are still rectangles. And some people like da vinchi are suspected of creating pieces to proportions of the golden ratio. I'm pretty sure there is more to this, because when I studied this in college math it was very compelling, but that's all I remember about that.

i don't know if it is used in non-western artwork but i suspect it is. Norman Rockwell used the technique i believe. if one uses the rule of thirds in composition, the golden mean can be found where the lines intersect around the center box. it is where the eye will naturally fall when looking at a piece of art, and it is used to draw the eye into the rest of the work.
