Does anyone know a place where I can learn how to use a sewing machine?
-
I need sewing classes, I am located in the OC. I want to be able to bring my fabric and patterns and just have someone teach me how to measure, use the sewing machine, and etc. Anyone know a place that I can get lessons from? I already checked JoAnn's and that's not what I am looking for. Pleaseeee HELP!

Answer:
Get out the phone book and start making some calls. Check under alterations also. If they don't give lessons, they may know someone who does.

Look in adult classes in your community. There is one class like you are looking for. It is not offered in summer. though. Do you mean Orange County. will you be willing to commute to Covina for the class in the fall? If so try tri-community adult education located on 4rd and Puente. Good luck.

The probable reason why you are having problems finding a place to learn how to use your machine AND sew is because you are asking for two separate classes. You first must learn how to use your machine before you can take a sewing class. I have spent years teaching students how to sew. I have had students who were beginners and others with more experience. Sewing classes are given to teach a student how to cut a pattern, fit to size and construct the garment with step by step instruction. Students need to already know how to use their machine in this type of environment. It is a matter of fairness to those who pay for the class to learn to sew a garment, with the assumption that other students already know how to use their machines. Class time is short and not to be used to teach one to use their machine during a sewing lesson. And, that is why the class at JoAnn's does not fit your needs. Please seek out a class that teaches sewing machine operation so you can learn how to use your machine before expecting to take a class to learn how to cut out patterns and construct a garment. P.S. Once you learn how to sew, you will be a seamstress, not a sewer. A sewer is a series of underground pipes that contain sewage from toilet waste.

It is EXACTLY places like JoAnn's that do this sort of things. Most of the large fabric stores, like Beverly's Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics and many of the shops that sell sewing machines and notions offer beginning sewing lessons. What was it about what was offered at JoAnn's that didn't work for you?
