What should I include in an art portfolio?

  • I'm applying for an art course later this year. I'm expected to have 10 - 15 pieces of work in my portfolio, but I'm not sure what type of work I should or shouldn't choose to include. Is it best to choose a wide variety of different types of artwork, or to mostly include the type of artwork you do best?

    I'd say use different mediums. What I did was: A drawing with charcoal that was still life but showed perspective. A water color painting- great for creating a fluid texture. A painting using oil paint if you have it, a b&w self portrait is always impressive. A drawing with pastels to show how you use color. It usually doesn't matter how perfect your pieces are because thats why you are taking a class, its more about how creative you can be in showcasing your talents. Also, its good to see pieces that show you'd like to improve on. Good Luck and have fun. Don't worry about them judging you, just be true to yourself.

If your in college then your tutor should help with it but if not it's best to get all your work out that you've done and separate it into what your going to use and what your leaving out. You need to show a wide range of different techniques and that you are versatile and willing to use different techniques and not just stick to one particular style of art. Make sure you take time when putting it together and present it nicely hope it helps

I would say to definitely include your best artwork into your portfolio. Any work that you have done in the past that is your best. This can be a variety of work.
